Newton Programmer´s Guide

This is the originial guide Apple published for Newton programmers. This is “the” source of information on what is possible with the Newton OS and how it is done. Heaps of code snippets and a thorough description of everything the 2.x OS allows programmers to do. This volume is a “must have” for anyone who wants to write Newton programs without having to waste time with chasing information.

Newton Programmer’s Reference for Newton 2.0

This is also a “must have” if you want to write Newton programs. It is an exhaustive reference for programming Newtons that run OS 2.0 or later. You will use this one all the time, so make sure you download the electronic version. Unless you want to print out 1390 pages, though, try to find it in book form. I’m not sure Apple ever published it that way, if you know such a book exists, please
tell me.

The NewtonScript Programming Language

The NewtonScript Programming Language is also good to have nearby whenever you write Newton programs. This book is a detailed reference of NewtonScript, the elegant programming language Newton programs are written in. I haven’t yet found this one in paper form, and to the best of my knowledge it has never been available in bookstores, but only at Apple. If you find a source where this book is still available, please
let me know.

The Newton User Interface Guidelines

A book that every programmer should learn by heart. Not only every Newton programmer, but every programmer. In this volume Apple describes on a couple of hundreds of pages how good, fast and intuitive user interfaces are designed. They certainly know what they are talking about, Apple has always been famous for ease-of-use. You won´t need this volume if you just want to write a program. If, however, you want to write a program with a user interface that your customers like, this is the book you should have nearby.

Programming for the Newton using Windows

An exellent book to get started. It was my “bible” when I started Newton programming and it is still within arm´s reach whenever I find the time to program. This book also provides excellent information on how to use the Windows version of the Newton Toolkit (NTK), the progamming environment that Apple used to sell for hundreds of $$ and that can now be downloaded for free both as a
Mac version and as a PC version. It comes with a CD with all the example code, some movies, documentation and other stuff.

Wireless for the Newton: Software Development for Mobile Communications

Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to read this book yet, but here is the short synopsis on the back:
"This book picks up where Programming For The Newton left off. It describes wireless technology as it relates to the Newton, discussing both current technologies and future directions. All aspects of communication with the Newton are covered, including printing, faxing, beaming, and mail. Coverage also includes wired and wireless communication with desktop computers. The enclosed floppy disk contains all of the sample applications from the book, as well as a fully functional demonstation version of the Newton Toolkit, Apple Computer's complete development environment for the Newton."
These days the full version of the Newton Toolkit can be downloaded for free both as a
Mac version and as a PC version.
